Reasons Why Your PPC Campaign Is Not Working Out

By: Ken Sundheim

Google is losing more and more ad revenue because companies are giving up on their “PPC” or “pay per click” search engine advertising campaigns. While many believe this failure to generate revenue through a PPC campaign rests on the shoulder of the search engine, Google is not to blame.

Blaming Google for a failed and overly expensive PPC campaign is not going to get you anywhere. Upon initiating the campaign, the search engine provides you with every tool necessary. You have your website listed on the top of the search engine results page, thus providing you with the chance to obtain the proper number hits to your site. The PPC advertising model is how Google makes money; the company is not naive. They have every reason to want you to succeed.

I like to give a specific analogy regarding this topic: blaming Google for bad PPC performance is like blaming your friend for setting you up with a dream date that you then went on to ruin by spilling pasta everywhere. So how can you increase your odds of generating a solid amount of ROI from this advertising model?

There are a few ways to do so:

1. Have a website that is easy to navigate. Remember that the sole purpose of people using search engines is to find information. If they don’t find the information they want within seconds of landing on your website, they will leave.

2. Don’t make your website look too busy.

Putting too many distracting visuals on your website is going make your website harder to figure out. Every video on your website is going to distract the visitor from their initial purpose of visit.

If you want to include video on your site, one should do it. Just make sure that the video it is geared towards educating the visitor about your product.

Moreover, the video should be small and off to the corner. There is nothing worse than having trouble contacting a company because their video is too big and it’s hard to navigate around it. While you’re at it, try to make an option for the visitor to close the window. This way, they can focus on buying the product.

3. Make sure your description tag is appealing. When the potential buyer searches the particular keywords which prompts your website to appear in the advertising section, keep your description factual instead of trying to promote your firm. Let’s use an insurance company as an example:

Here’s an example of a bad advertising sentence:

“We are Houston’s best insurance carrier. Check our unbeatable prices today!”

Here’s an example of an effective advertising tag:

“Houston based insurance carrier focusing on car, life, health, property & casualty.”

4. Avoid Opening Flash Sequences. Opening flash sequences are an annoyance. The name of the game is to make the visitor have the information they need readily available. This type of opening just prolongs the sequence for the buyer and heightens the risk for a costly bounce. This is not to mention that Google cannot read flash. A flash intro will have absolutely no positive effect on an SEO campaign.

5 Tips for PPC Success

You’ve probably heard of pay-per-click before. It is usually abbreviated as PPC and it is an internet advertising model that involves advertisers paying their host sites only when their advertisements are clicked. Content sites usually charge a set amount per click. For search engines, advertisers bid for keywords and phrases that are relevant to their target market. The following five tips will help you set up a successful PPC advertising campaign, so that you reach the widest audience in a way that doesn’t break your wallet.

1. Have unique landing pages
Unique landing pages are immensely important in the world of PPC advertisement, especially if you’re promoting an affiliate product. On each landing page, include consumer reviews of whatever product or products you’re advertising, as these increase sales by 50% or more.

2. Bid on cheap, relevant keywords and phrases
This applies when you are doing PPC on search engines. Do a bit of research into your target market and find key words and phrases that are relevant and descriptive of your product and that are low-cost, as these will often be the keywords with the least competition. Build a base of these low-cost keywords. 30 or more are best for getting the most out of your pay-per-click costs.

3. Insert keywords in ad titles and descriptions

Once you have your 30 or more keywords chose, make 6 to 7 unique ads and put 3 to 4 of your chosen keywords in each of them, like Houston, TX SEO. Use the keywords in your ad titles and descriptions to increase your click through rate by about 40%.

4. Have a professional URL
If potential buyers click on an ad and land on a page that looks like an affiliate link, chances are higher that they all click out of the site without buying anything. That’s why it’s crucial that you invest in a professional URL. Pick one that contains plenty of keywords and describes the products and/or services you are selling.

5. Stick to your budget
Sticking to the budget is essential to coming out on top with a PPC campaign. Calculate how much youare making per sale and what percentage of visitors is likely to buy your product. Compare these numbers with your cost per click and set a limit of about .08 to .10 cents.
